Years ago, I would have built my own system using scripts and free Veeam. The nice thing is how Endpoint integrates into "big Veeam" to allow us to see job status and do restores right from the main console. I also use Veeam Endpoint extensively to back up workstations, VM hosts, and our mobile workforce. I kept adding licenses over time until I had my entire company using the same system. I started by getting it rolled into a grant for some law enforcement servers. There is a bit of sticker shock the first time you think about licensing Veeam. Veeam B&R also gives you scheduling, replication, backup copy jobs, and enough other features that you can customize it to provide availability the way your setup requires it. You don't get incremental backups and all the wonderful that goes along with that. It's great if you need a way to make a backup of a VM.

The free version, aka Veeam Zip, allows you to do full backups. But the free version is miles ahead of nothing. In addition, the VMs will be freed from the otherwise standard additional VMware snapshots. You lose a lot.

Thus, problems can be resolved more easily, and workaround, software patches or new program code can be tested without building a separate test environment. The On-demand Sandbox assists with the creation of test virtual machines (VMs) at any time that has been backed up. Advantage: Expensive specialty utilities become redundant and every application and user benefits from granular recovery. To accomplish this, additional backups, agents or software utilities are not necessary. This system permits recovery of individual objects from any virtualized application under each operating system.
